Umbriel
Umbriel is classified among the natural satellites of Uranus.[1]
History
William Lassell discovered Umbriel on October 24, 1851.[1] The name Umbriel honors a villainous spirit created by poet Alexander Pope.[1]
Findings
Umbriel reflects about 16 percent of incident light, less than any other major moon orbiting Uranus.[1] Voyager 2 captured views in 1986 that revealed dense impact scarring across the south of Umbriel.[1] NASA puts Umbriel's diameter at about 1,200 kilometres.[1] JPL lists Umbriel's mean radius as 584.7 kilometres.[2] NASA says the cause of the dark ancient surface on Umbriel remains unknown.[1] USGS lists craters among the mapped feature types on Umbriel.[3]
